Understanding what to avoid — and why — is just as important as knowing what to wear. Scripture gives us a clear standard, and love for God and others is the reason we hold it.

Why This Conversation Matters
The church has largely gone silent on the subject of modesty — and the culture has rushed in to fill that silence. Women are told that any standard of dress is judgmental, controlling, or outdated. But Scripture does not agree.

What to Avoid — and Why
Revealing Necklines & Cleavage
Any garment that exposes or suggests cleavage draws attention to the body in a way that dishonors God and disrespects those around you. The chest is not a display — it is a private gift reserved for a husband.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20
Short Skirts, Dresses & Shorts
Hemlines that fall above the knee — or worse, mid-thigh — communicate availability rather than godliness. A woman of God covers herself not because her body is shameful, but because it is sacred.
1 Timothy 2:9
Form-Fitting & Body-Con Clothing
Clothing that clings to and outlines the body's curves is designed to attract sexual attention. Regardless of how much fabric is present, if the shape of the body is the point, the garment is immodest.
Romans 13:14
Sheer & See-Through Fabric
Sheer tops, lace overlays, and see-through panels — whether worn alone or over undergarments — create the impression of exposure. If the garment requires a viewer to look twice, it is not modest.

Visible Undergarments
Bra straps, underwear lines, and visible lining are not style choices — they are signs of carelessness in how we present ourselves before God and others. Undergarments are meant to be unseen.

Overly Tight or Low-Rise Bottoms
Pants, jeans, or skirts that sit low on the hips or are cut so tightly that movement reveals the body are inappropriate for the woman of God — in church, in public, and in daily life.

When we dress modestly, we love our brothers by not placing a stumbling block before them. We love our sisters by not competing with them. We love God by honoring the body He gave us. Modesty is not a burden — it is a beautiful expression of a heart that has been transformed.
